Thailand's southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat— an area predominantly inhabited by Malay-Muslim people—have been experiencing continuous violence. The enforcement of three special laws to control the crisis have not resolved the conflict and instead led to violations of the human rights of people living in the area. The prolonged conflict has also fostered a perception of the region as a hotbed of danger, not only in the eyes of the Thai state but also among citizens in other regions. Yet in the midst of challenging circumstances, "ordinary" people continue to lead their lives, carry out their daily tasks, and navigate the challenges posed by the conflict. Supported by Minority Rights Group International and co-funded by the European Union, the photo project by Yostorn Triyos focuses on this “parallel reality,” employing photography as a tool to narrate the way of life and culture of people in the area.
Organized by SEA Junction and Realframe, the exhibition raises questions about the outsiders’ view of this region and its population as “troublesome” and “diverse”. It offers an alternative perspective that transcends the continuous media portrayal of violence. The exhibition will be accompanied with a panel discussion on 24 September 2023, 5:00-6:30 pm at SEA Junction.
