Thai Taxi Talismans exhibition at People’s Gallery in the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre from 1 – 29 August 2014 features photographs by artist / photographer Dale Konstanz taken inside Bangkok taxis during the past eight years. The photos focus on cab interiors jam-packed with lucky charms, as well as still life groupings of sacred decorations and pop culture trinkets sitting on dashboards, dangling from rearview mirrors, and hanging from ceilings inside the cabs. The miscellaneous icons and ornaments serve a host of functions, including protecting the drivers and passengers, attracting cold hard cash, and simply creating a fun and happy work environment for the cabbies.
Konstanz’s series documents a traditional Thai custom, but in a contemporary context. It is a subject that is quite familiar to anyone who lives in Thailand or visits the Kingdom and yet it is something that is often overlooked or taken for granted, especially by locals. The work is intended to be accessible, and viewers will hopefully be able to walk away with a greater appreciation for this facet of Thai culture.
