PhotoBangkok 2018 An international photography festival to elevate Thai photography

The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and PhotoBangkok, in collaboration withThai and international cultural organizations and over 20 art galleries in Bangkok, will organize the international photography festival PhotoBangkok 2018. The festival is set to provide opportunity and a platform for Thai contemporary photographers to showcase their works, generate interest in the development of contemporary photography in Thailand and invite emerging Thai photographers and photography lovers to learn from leading international and Southeast Asian photographers. In addition, MQDC, the main sponsor of PhotoBangkok 2018, will organize Beautiful Bangkok: Smartphone Photo Contest By MQDC, the first competition for smartphone photography in Thailand, to highlight the beauty of the Thai capital.

Assistant Professor Pawit Mahasarinand, Director of Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), as the director of the PhotoBangkok festival, stated that PhotoBangkok 2018 is the second edition of the PhotoBangkok festival. As an international photography festival set to be held across the Thai capital city, it is aimed not only at providing opportunity and an alternative platform for Thai contemporary photographers to present their works but also at generating business opportunities in the creative industries in Thailand and beyond. In addition, the festival will simultaneously act as a gathering place for artists and facilitate collaboration, which will lead to the promotion and maximization of intellectual property and knowledge exchange in the field of photography and create cultural links between today’s and future generations. PhotoBangkok 2018 is possible thanks to the support of many individuals and organizations, from educational institutions to galleries, artists, curators, designers and those working in the photographic community and related industries, such as camera and film manufacturers and digital technology providers.

Pawit also added that PhotoBangkok 2018 will help promote Thailand’s image as a destination of cultural tourism, generate interest in fine art photography among the general public and attract foreign travellers to Thailand, which will only create a positive impact on urban development and economic value based on creativity and photography.

According to Piyatat Hemmatat, Artistic Director of PhotoBangkok, the goal of PhotoBangkok, which is a triennial, non-profit photography festival first organized in 2015, is to provide space for photographers in Asia to showcase their works and promote exhibitions by other photographers organized across Bangkok at the same time period. The festival is hoped to not only inspire the general public but also promote knowledge sharing amongst artists for the development of society.

Leading photographers in Southeast Asia and beyond are invited to show their works and participate in a number of activities aimed at promoting an exchange of knowledge and visions between Thai and international photographers.

The highlights of the festival will be exhibitions by leading international photographers, curators and photography experts, including Cristina de Middel, Kris Scholz , YumiGoto, Toeingam Guptabutra (Thailand) and Angki Purbandono (Indonesia)  and some 30 other artists from 11 countries in Southeast Asia.

Apart from these main exhibitions, five other major activities are a smartphone photo contest, a portfolio review, installation art, an international symposium and a photobook exhibition. Other minor events include educational exhibitions and talks.

“PhotoBangkok 2018 hopes to underline Bangkok’s position as a photography hub in Asia with a capacity to host a photography festival of an international scale and to encourage all parties involved in the development of photography in Thailand to invest in the promotion of Thai photographers’ talent and professionalism so that they can compete on the global stage,” said Piyatat.

PhotoBangkok 2018 will be held from 5 July to 9 September 2018. The main exhibition will be organized on the 8th floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC).
