The lecture will look into the historical depth and global range for art works and practices we might call ‘The Asian Modern’. It will not rehearse the copious arguments for, and some against, the notion of a modernity in art emerging in parallel to, and at the same time in concert with modernity in Euramerica. Suffice it to reiterate that ‘The Asian Modern’ is an hermeneutic construct for interpreting multiple art discourses, an empirical field for understanding and ordering the minutiae of data about art practice and interpretation, and a periodization which can be culturally and historically denoted in a particular set of geographically defined entities which became the modern state system in Asia from the onset of late Euramerican colonialism in the 18th century until the end of colonial rule in the mid-20th. The speaker will also offer studies and views of the massive Asian emerging phenomena in the recent international art arena that leads to the conception of this terminology of the Worlding of Asian art and Asian Modern.
John Clark is Professor of Asian Art History at the University of Sydney. He was Australia Research Council Professorial Fellow. His educational background are as follow; BA Lancaster, Postgraduate Certificate in Fine Art, Croydon College, PhD Sheffield. Professor John Clark is a preeminent world scholar on Asian art. He has given major keynote lectures in Beijing, Berlin, London and Tokyo. His extensive research covers mainly the Asian art movements in Japan, China and Thailand. He also has interests in modern Malaysian, Indonesian and Indian art. He has authored and co-edited significant books on Asian art including, Modern Asian Art (Craftsman House/University of Hawaii Press, 1998, Modernities of Chinese Art (Brill 2010) and Asian Modernities; Chinese and Thai Art Compared, 1980 to 1999 (Power Publications, 2010). He has also contributed frequently for scholarly and art world journals such as Art and Asia Pacific, Journal of the Oriental Society of Australia, TAASA Review, Grove Art Online / The Dictionary of Art.
