Location: People's Gallery P3, 2nd floor

By Lionel Descostes
Opening ceremony on Saturday 2 July 2016 at 18.00 hrs.

Lionel Descostes is a French artist living for 20 years in Asia, conducting research about art in Japan, Singapore and Indonesia. He finally settled in Hanoi where he has been living for 16 years. He began his professional career by working in the field of craftwork. Alerted by the progressive dissolution of the craftwork villages in modernizing Vietnam, Lionel decided to use art to keep embroidery alive and support its community. While doing this, deeply committed to help disabled people to fit into professional and social life, he hired 9 deaf and mute girls and started to train them to his technique.
“Working on my project, these girls discovered a new approach and another finality to embroidery” he quotes.
For this exhibition, the artist presents three “families” of his larger body of work: pictograms, grids and masks. Each of these groups explores from a different perspective the same theme: anonymity, the position of individuals in society.
