ASIATOPIA TALK 2015 #1 “30 Years Performance Art Chumpon Apisuk”

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, in cooperation with ASIATOPIA International Performance Art Festival, organized the first ASIATOPIA Talk in 2014. The objective of the Talk is to act as an open platform for the artists and the public to exchange ideas around performance art as well as to allow further interpretation of the concept behind each work.
 
The first talk Introduces the book describing the life and works of Chumpon Apisuk, a year of screening artworks and studying the biography of performance artist. Chumpon Apisuk, the founder of ASIATOPIA International Performance Art Festival, is considered one of the most annually reoccurring performance art festivals in Asia. The book reflects the viewpoint on life from his youth up to the turning point that made Chumpon become interested in art and professionalized performance art for over 30 years, and his principles of performing performance art. This book is the prologue to the story of Thai performance art documented and expressed through the artist. It is also a part of supplementary documents to Install – Action; 30 Years Performance Art Chumpon Apisuk Festival. Apart from introducing the book, there is also a 15 days lecture on the result of Performance art hosted by Chumpon and guest artists, which is considered as another form of his cooperation with other artists.
 
ASIATOPIA Talk 2015 will be organized in four intervals: July, October, November, and December. Each attempts to focus on different aspects and highlights on the experiences shared by the artists who will be the speakers. The talk aims to present the artists’ work approach, inspiration, and allow the audience to admire the practice of performance art.
 
Chumpon Apisuk
The pioneer of Performance art in Thailand, the founder and director of ASIATOPIA International Performance Art Festival, and the founder of Concrete House, an Art and Community Action Centre in Nonthaburi, north of Bangkok in 1993. Chumpon is the artist who laid the foundation of Performance art in Thailand, and has been continuously working up to today. Chumpon’s performances are globally admired. He has been invited to perform and speak on the topic of Performance art in various countries worldwide for over 30 years.
