In June 2017, Platform, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, and The Embassy of France to Thailand will present an exhibition titled, What is not visible is not invisible: Selection from the 23 French Regional Collections of Contemporary Art (FRAC). FRACs are French Regional Collections of Contemporary Art created in 1982 as part of the policy of devolution of power set by the government via regional councils in order for art to be present in each and every one of France’s twenty three regions. Today, the FRACs’ collections gather 26,000 works from 5,400 French and foreign artists. Platform is the umbrella organization of the 23 French Regional Collections of contemporary in France. This national network regularly coordinates collective projects abroad in order to show the FRACs’ collections internationally. This exhibition is originally conceived by Platform in collaboration with the 23 FRACs and was firstly co-organised with National Heritage Board and National Museum of Singapore. The latest exhibition was co-curated with SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation in South Korea.
Collaborated with curators Laurence Gateau (Director of FRAC des Pays de la Loire), Anne-Claire Duprat (General Secretary of Platform) in discussion with the 23 FRAC Directors, and Pichaya Aime Suphavanij (Head of Exhibitions of BACC), this exhibition will present works of 23 works by 21 French and international artists from the FRACs collections including two renowned Thai artists; Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and Pratchaya Phinthong, showing as a group for the first time in Thailand. This exhibition will be a good insight in supporting the contemporary art based on the activities and collections of FRACs.
The visual paradox initiated in this modest yet profound work sets the premise for the deep-seeded themes that resonate throughout the exhibition. The artworks navigate a transient journey through both the philosophical and the physical by means of unconventional approaches in art-making. Together, the artworks encourage visitors to interact with and explore the intangible, the emotional and the volatile relationship between the abstract, the organic and the structured.
