Thai-style Musical “Love astray”

Date : 17 August - 27 August 2017

Location: Studio, 4th floor

"A reimagined musical as a tribute to the music master 'Soodjit Duriyapraneet' presents a love story in the times of cultural awakening"

This is a satire comedy musical of Siam under Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram’ progressivist rule that promotes modernization of the country to keep up with the western powers during the Second World War. Written and directed by Pradit Prasartthong, 2004 Silpathorn Award winner, with musical scores from National Artist Sudjit Duriyapraneet.

A comedy musical, driven by scores specially written for a musical. Most of the music comes from the works of Sudjit Duriyapraneet, played with Western instruments, with all-new script and lyrics to conform to the styles of musicals.

Background:
In the year 1941, Siam was under the rule of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, whose policy of modernization calls for a set of Thai cultural mandates, the effects of which can still be seen even in the present day Thailand.

Synopsis:
The story takes place in the Department of Publicity, when “Pantana Yothakun”, a young female singer was invited to sing a song promoting the habit of wearing a hat to demonstrate the civility, but she herself chose not to wear one. Chaos ensues, with an unexpected romance between the ‘standard’ singer and a folk Likay performer to lead the love even further astray.
