Bangkok Art and Culture Centre proudly presents “Cinema Diverse: Director's Choice 2016: The Female Perspective”. For the fourth Cinema Diverse, four international films, selected by five acclaimed female Thai directors, will be shown bi-monthly from May – November 2016.After each screening there will be a post-screening talk and a Q&A session to discuss ideas and thoughts about the film with the directors.
The first screening on Saturday 21 May 2016 is The Pearl Button (Chile / 2015) directed by Patricio Guzmán and chosen by Soraya Nakasuwan, an acclaimed Thai director of Final Score and RahtreeSawasdi.
The Pearl Button is a 2015 Chilean documentary film. It was screened in the main competition section of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear for Best Script. It won the Lumières Award for Best Documentary at the 21st Lumières Awards.
The film is part of a triptych with Nostalgia for the Light and potentially a third film focusing on the Andes, exploring familiar Guzmán themes such as memory and the historical past, particularly of that of the history's "losers" rather than victors, as it documents the settlement of Chile’s Tierra del Fuego, including some of the last surviving descendants of the original Alacalufe and Yaghan inhabitants.

The Pearl Button tells the story of the history of Chile and how that history is profoundly intertwined with the ocean. Jemmy Button was a boy from a small island. He was one of the island's original inhabitants and he was sold in an exchange for a pearl button. Later he was unable to reconnect with his former identity upon returning to the island.
The Pearl Button is presented like a film essay in narrative form with breath-taking and delicate cinematography.”

The ocean contains the history of all humanity. The sea holds the voices of the Earth and those that come from outer space. Water receives impetus from the stars and transmits it to living creatures. Water, the longest border in Chile, also holds the secret of a mysterious button that was discovered in its seabed. Chile, with its 2,670 miles of coastline, the largest archipelago in the world, presents a supernatural landscape. In it are volcanoes, mountains and glaciers. In it are the voices of the Patagonian indigenous people, of the first English sailors and also those of its political prisoners. Some say that water has memory. This film shows that it also has a voice.
