ThaiPBS commemorates the 40th anniversary of 1973 Thai popular uprising with a photo exhibition “14 October 1973, Thai Popular Uprising”

 

ThaiPBS, collaborating with Thammasart University, Pridi Banomyong Institute, King Prajadhipok's Institute, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, and 14 October Foundation, will host the “40TH year of 14 October 1973, Thai Popular Uprising” photo exhibition to commemorate the 40th anniversary of 14 October 1973, the biggest uprising in the history of Thailand. The exhibition features photos of 14 October 1973 event from many sources, including never-before-seen photos from Mr.Sathan Pairor, an ABC news photographer. 

 

From 1973 to 2013, time has passed for 40 years. Memories captured through camera lens have become the record of history that reminds us of the great power of people marching through Ratchadamnern Avenue, demanding “democracy”. Even though there have been many uprisings afterwards, the 14 October 1973 event has become an important historical reference which has always been brought up.

 

The “40TH year of 14 October 1973, Thai Popular Uprising” photo exhibition features 40 historical photos from photographers from various newspaper agencies. Every photo, collected by 14 October Foundation, tells the beginning of the demand for democracy made by university students which had become rallies in Thammasart University, resulting in students and people gathered around Ratchadamnern Avenue and Democracy Monument. Other photos include the attack in front of Suan Chitralada Palce, which is still unknown as to what happened during the morning of 14 October 1973, soldiers and police attacking people, and the aftermath of the event.   

 

The “40TH year of 14 October 1973, Thai Popular Uprising” photo exhibition is held from 1-20 October 2013 on the 1st floor of Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) during 10.00 a.m. – 9 p.m. Then the exhibition will be displayed at Learning Center Building at ThaiPBS afterwards.
