BACC Art Talk 2018: “Lesson Abroad Series” # 2
"Thawan Duchanee 1964-1968: a retrospective of the unknown Zoomers/Consen's collection"

Lecturer: Mr Henk Zoomers (Thai art history scholar who owns Thawan's unknown works)

After finishing his study at Silpakorn University in Bangkok, the late Thai National Artist studied during the period 1964-68 with a scholarship from the Dutch government at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts)  in Amsterdam. In 1967 Thawan held two exhibitions at Museum Fodor and at Amsterdam Noord.

Henk Zoomers and his wife, Tine Consen (Thawan’s ex-girlfriend in Amsterdam), met Thawan again at his BR Apartment at New Petchburi Rd. In 1974, and later at his home at Navatanee (Bangkok), at Jed Yod and at Baan Dam (Chiang Rai), which gradually expanded and changed colour from light brown into deep black.

Thawan’s demise in 2014 caused a sense of urgency to Mr Zoomers, a scholar on Thai history, about the art collection in his possession: 16 oil paintings, 9 drawings and 8 sketches. Having been stored for half a century in cellar and basement, Mr Zoomers would like to bring the Zoomers/Consen's collection into public. He decided to postpone his PH.D. writing about early Ratanakosin relations between the Dutch East Indies and Siam and write a monograph about Thawan’s sojourn in the Netherlands, his two exhibitions and his works of art he created during this period.

Mr Zoomers’ lecture at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) will cover the following topics:
- A description of Thawan’s study at the RBK, his two exhibitions and sojourn in the Netherlands
- The relationship between his family and Thawan Duchanee, as well as comments on misinfornation written about Thawan in Thai newspapers and magazines
- an overview of Thawan’s artworks in his possession.

The lecture is based on archival research on RBK, Museum Fodor and Amsterdam Noord, exhibition invitations, interviews, travel notes and personal correspondence.

**Lecture is conducted in English and free of charge
No reservation is required.
